Most South African small businesses don’t need a big website. They need a page that looks real and makes it easy to call. We compared 9 options on first-year cost in rand, who does the building, domain and billing currency. Our pick for the best website builder in South Africa for busy owners is Just1, because it is the cheapest done-for-you option here: R97 once-off, built over WhatsApp. We sell Just1, so every competitor price below comes from that provider’s own page.
Key Takeaways
- Just1 is the cheapest done-for-you option. R97 once-off with 3 months online, then R97 every 3 months, so R388 in year one. You never open an editor.
- HostAfrica is the cheapest DIY builder in rand. R29.70/month for 3 months, then R99/month: R980 in year one. You build and update the site yourself.
- Dollar builders cost more than they look. Wix, WordPress.com, Shopify and Hostinger bill in US dollars, so the rand price moves with the exchange rate. Tax is often added at checkout.
- Your own .co.za is not always included. 1-grid and The Webster include one; HostAfrica and Just1’s R97 option give you a sub-domain. Just1 Page Care (R199/month) registers a .co.za in your name.
- Pick on what you sell. Shops want Shopify. Writers want WordPress.com. Trades and service businesses that get work by phone need one clear page more than a big site.
What a website builder actually is (and what it is not)
A website builder is a paid tool for making a website without writing code. You pick a template or let AI make a first draft, then you change the text, photos and layout in an online editor. The monthly fee covers hosting, so the site stays online. Most plans add a free domain for the first year.
A builder is not a designer. It won’t write your services, choose your best photos or decide what goes at the top of the page. That work is still yours, and it is usually where the time goes. Most owners who “never finished the website” got stuck here, not on the software.
It is also not a marketing plan. A new website doesn’t bring visitors by itself. People find it through the link you share on WhatsApp, on your bakkie or quotes, on social media, on Google once it is indexed, or through ads.
Done-for-you services sit next to builders. You send your details and someone else builds the site. Some charge once-off, some monthly, and a few, like Just1 and The Webster, include hosting in the price.
So this list mixes both kinds on purpose. For a small business owner the real question isn’t “which editor is best?” It is “what is the cheapest way to get a site that looks real and gets me calls, given the time I have?”
How We Ranked These Website Builders
We looked at each provider’s own pricing page on 14 October 2026, from a South African internet connection, and used the cheapest plan that publishes a business site. We scored them on:
- First-year cost in rand, including hosting, at the cheapest plan. Dollar prices are converted at US$1 = R16.50 (ECB reference rate, 13 October 2026), before tax.
- Who builds the site: you, an AI draft you finish, or a person who does it for you.
- Billing currency: rand prices stay the same; dollar prices move with the exchange rate.
- Own domain in year one: whether a domain like yourbusiness.co.za is included.
- Pages on the cheapest plan, where the provider states a limit.
We left out providers whose pricing pages we couldn’t load (GoDaddy, Afrihost and Webafrica). We didn’t use review-site ratings we couldn’t check. Just1 is ranked first for one reason you can check: no other option here builds the site for you for less in year one.
The Best Website Builders in 2026
Nine options, ranked for South African small businesses that want to look professional and get enquiries without a big budget. Each entry says who it suits best. Prices are from each provider’s own site on 14 October 2026; if one has changed, tell us on WhatsApp and we’ll fix it.
1. Just1, best for a done-for-you website over WhatsApp
Just1 is a South African service, not a DIY editor. You pay, send your details and photos in one WhatsApp chat, and we build the page. Our terms promise a preview within 24 hours of getting everything we need. You approve it in the same chat and we publish it. No laptop, no sales call.
It costs R97 once-off, including the first 3 months online at yourbusiness.just1.co.za. After that it is R97 every 3 months, so year one costs R388. For your own .co.za and email, Page Care is R199/month with no R97 fee: the domain is registered in your name and you WhatsApp us changes, one batch a day, done within 24 hours.
You pay in rand: card through PayFast, EFT or an FNB ATM cash deposit with the invoice reference, or cash at Pick n Pay, Checkers, Shoprite, Spar, Boxer, PEP or Ackermans through Pay@. No credit card needed. A 90-day guarantee refunds the website payment, and you keep the site.
Across 34 paid websites up to 3 October 2026, the median time from payment to a built site was 4.5 hours, and to a live site 43 hours. Our industry pages show 28 live customer sites, from a plumber in Cosmo City to an attorneys’ firm.
The limits are real. It is one page. There is no booking system or online shop, and on the R97 option, changes after delivery aren’t included.
Best suited for: Owners who are on site or on the road all day and want a website live this week without touching a laptop. It fits service businesses that get work through calls and WhatsApp, not online sales.

2. The Webster, best for a done-for-you multi-page site with Google Business Profile work
The Webster is a South African web design company that focuses on trades: builders, plumbers and garden services. Its Standard Plan is R250/month for a professionally designed site of up to 5 pages, with hosting, a co.za domain, business email, SSL and 1 hour of maintenance a month. That is R3,000 for year one. There is no setup fee, you can cancel anytime, and payment runs through PayFast.
The Growth Pack is R850/month. It adds Google Business Profile optimisation, on-page SEO for your main local keyword, a review growth system and weekly ranking reports on WhatsApp, with a promise of Google’s top 3 in 90 days or your next month free. An E-commerce Pro plan is R455/month for up to 50 products.
Its home page says it has delivered 150+ websites across South Africa and shows 135 five-star reviews on Google.
You get more pages and an hour of changes every month, but you pay monthly for as long as you stay.
Best suited for: Trades that want several pages and someone working on their Google ranking every month. Worth it if Google Maps calls are your main source of work and R850/month fits the budget.

3. HostAfrica AI Builder, best for the cheapest DIY builder billed in rand
HostAfrica is a hosting company with a South African site and prices in rand. Its AI Builder is R29.70/month for the first 3 months, then R99/month, so year one costs R980.10. You describe your business in a sentence and the AI lays out a first draft with text for pages like Home, About, Services and Contact. Then you edit the words, photos and pages yourself.
The plan includes a free sub-domain, not your own domain. A WhatsApp button is one of the builder’s quick add-ons. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee, and HostAfrica accepts EFT, debit cards, credit cards and mobile payments.
Its page shows a 4.9 rating from 2,816 reviews on Trustpilot. That rating is for the company as a whole, not the builder alone.
The catch with any DIY builder: the writing, the photos and every update are your job.
Best suited for: Owners who are comfortable on a laptop and want to edit their own site whenever they like. Good value if you will keep it up to date yourself.

4. 1-grid Website Builder, best for a DIY site with a free .co.za for the first year
1-grid is a South African hosting company. Its Basic builder plan is R129/month with hosting, up to 10 pages, an AI or template start and a drag-and-drop editor. Paid monthly, year one costs R1,548; paying annually saves 10%.
Signing up gets you a free .co.za, .online or .site domain for a year. Standard (R249/month) moves you to 35 pages and a shop of 10 products, and Premium (R349/month) has unlimited pages and products. 1-grid says you are backed by its local support team.
It costs more than HostAfrica’s first year, but your own .co.za is included from day one and the page limit is clear.
Best suited for: Small businesses that want their own .co.za and a few pages, and have time to build them. A good step up if you might add a small shop later.

5. WordPress.com, best for blogs and content-heavy sites
WordPress.com is the hosted version of WordPress. The Personal plan is US$4/month billed yearly, or US$9 month to month, and US$2.75/month if you pay for 3 years. Year one on the yearly plan is US$48, about ≈R792 at the 13 October 2026 exchange rate, before tax.
Paid yearly plans include a free domain for one year, and WordPress.com says plugins, from a library of over 60,000, are available from the Personal plan up. To accept payments you move to Premium at US$8/month billed yearly.
You are billed in dollars, so the rand cost moves with the exchange rate.
Best suited for: People who will publish articles, guides or news often and want room to grow. Less suited to a busy owner who just needs a contact page.

6. Wix, best for drag-and-drop design freedom
Wix is a DIY builder with an AI start and a drag-and-drop editor. Its Light plan is US$17/month on a yearly subscription, which is US$204 or about ≈R3,365 for year one. Core (US$29/month) is the cheapest plan that lists accepting payments. There is also a free plan.
Wix showed us dollar prices from a South African connection and says they are “for reference only”: the final price, with tax, appears on the purchase page. Paid plans include a free domain for 1 year, and there is a 14-day money-back guarantee.
You can start from a single AI prompt or one of thousands of templates, then move anything on the page. That freedom is the appeal, and also where the hours go.
Best suited for: Owners who enjoy design and want full control over every block on the page. Plan for a weekend or two to get it right.

7. Squarespace, best for design-led portfolios, priced in rand
Squarespace is a DIY builder with design-led templates. From a South African connection its Basic plan shows as R300/month paid annually, or R430 month to month. Year one on the annual plan is R3,600. Core is R440/month annually.
There is no free plan, but every site starts with a 14-day free trial and no credit card. Annual plans include a free custom domain for the first year.
It is the most expensive DIY option here, and you still do the building.
Best suited for: Photographers, designers and venues whose pictures sell the work. A good fit if you want a gallery-heavy site and will build it yourself.

8. Shopify, best for online shops
Shopify is built for selling products online. Its South African pricing page shows Basic at US$19/month paid yearly or US$25 month to month, after 3 free days and then US$1/month for 3 months. Year one at the yearly rate is US$228, about ≈R3,761.
Basic lets you sell online and in person, and charges a 2% fee when you use a third-party payment provider. Check which South African payment gateway you will use before you pick a plan.
For a business that sells services and gets work by phone, it is more than you need.
Best suited for: Shops with stock, delivery and online checkout. Not the right tool for a plumber or a salon.

9. Hostinger Website Builder, best for the lowest monthly price if you prepay four years
Hostinger’s Premium builder plan is US$2.99/month, but only if you pay 48 months upfront: US$143.52, about ≈R2,368. It then renews at US$10.99/month.
Premium covers up to 3 websites, a custom domain free for 1 year, 400+ templates and AI credits to get started. There is a 30-day money-back guarantee. Hostinger says 10M+ websites have been created with it.
The low monthly figure needs a four-year commitment, and you build and maintain the site yourself.
Best suited for: Owners who are sure they will keep the same site for years and are happy to pay upfront. Also handy if you run more than one small site.

What results look like
A website is only worth what it does for the business. Here is what we can show from our own customers, with the numbers we have.
- Speed: across 34 paid websites up to 3 October 2026, the median was 4.5 hours from payment to a built site and 43 hours to a live one.
- 28 live customer sites are shown on our industry pages, from plumbers and builders to attorneys and photographers. 50 Just1 sites are live right now.
- 24/7 Auto Electric, Midrand: Google search ads we set up, 16 April to 23 June 2026: R15,097.60 ad spend, 2,163 clicks on the ads, 657 tracked taps on call or WhatsApp, R22.98 per tracked tap. A tracked tap is a tap on the call or WhatsApp button after an ad click, not a booked job.
