In 2025, South Africans searched “kitchen cupboards” (81) more than “carpentry” (37), “built in cupboards” (19), “shopfitting” (1) or “carpenter near me” (0). These are Google’s yearly averages for one comparison. From 2019 to 2025, the top five rising searches related to “carpenter” were about pop singers such as Sabrina Carpenter. Shopfitting is a R3 billion trade

Stats SA’s construction survey puts the income of VAT-registered shopfitting businesses at R2,984 million in 2020, up from R1,320 million in 2011, with 3,630 people employed in June 2020. Finish carpentry is counted with glazing and tiling under “other building completion”, so there is no separate figure for carpenters.
